East-Air is a time of new beginnings. Standing up on those wobbly legs and learning to run.
South-Fire is a time of Vitality and power. But Fire consumes.
West-Earth  Autumn. The Fire of Summer has heated the Earth. Scorched her in fact, and now she is dry, and dying, but offers her harvest of the year as a sacrifice to us. She has become the Elder, returning to the Earth.
North-Water Rains and Snow of the Winter begin. Cooling the scorched ground, filling the earth, and creating a womb for new life to return in the Spring

Observing this as Air in the East
Another model we look at when choosing to use the elements in this order is that in the pentagram itself, when we invoke Earth, we draw down to earth, then up to Water, across to Air, down to Fire and up to Spirit. Moving from the most dense to the least dense in that order.
5 Elements within the Pentagram
There are many ways this pentagram and the elemental associations can be used. As an example:
Pentagram of Resolution:
Draw down to Earth : What is the manifested problem, what is the actual trouble or focus of the discontent?
Draw up to Water: Reflect on this. How does it make you feel?
Across to Air: Reasoning – Look at the problem objectively. Lift it from its emotional aspect and see it for what it really is.
Down to Fire: Action. With the reasoning instilled in us from Air, now make a plan of action, or perform the action necessary (as one would if one was doing a ritual for a specific need)
Draw Up to Spirit: So Mote it Be – After being dealt with, we bring ourselves back to Spirit. Center.
Earth   contains all the elements within it. Air within the soil. Water beneath our soil, and Fire within it’s center. Likewise Water needs Air in order for it to be livable for the aquatic life, air is necessary for Fire to burn.  Although we have primary elements for our four directions, it is important to be mindful of the bigger picture, of how it all works together.
